Fashion and function

During my pregnancy with my son, I did not invest in a lot of maternity pieces. I was still able to put together stylish outfits without much of a hassle.   After I had my son, that was a different story. I slowly adjusted to my post pregnancy body, but my biggest challenge was putting outfits together that were accessible to breastfeed my son. After being pregnant, I was excited to wear some of my favorite items in my closet, but I was sadly disappointed. Most of those items just didn't work for breastfeeding. I knew that I wanted to breastfeed for more than a year, so I did the research. My breastfeeding journey with my son lasted almost three years. During those years I was able to pull looks together that were fashionable and functional. My experience has helped me work with some amazing moms during their breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding can be challenging on its own, and your clothes shouldn't add to that.

Last night, I was honored to style Jaclyn Small. She was the M.C. for Messiah Community Church's Gospel Concert featuring Fred Hammond, Tiffany Jeffers, and James Johnson. Whether you are a working mom, or stay at home mom... comfortable, functional, and stylish clothes are available for nursing mamas! Jaclyn wore a tank top that allowed for easy access to breastfeed her daughter throughout the evening. The animal print kimono style cardigan was a great layering piece, that added more dimension and attitude to her outfit. The kimono cardigan even helped to disguise small milk stains and was simple to adjust during feedings. The gold buckle belt cinched the kimono cardigan to create a more defined waist. The skinny denim jeans paired perfectly with the flowy silhouette of the kimono cardigan. The tie up wedge heels added a little edge and skin needed to complete the outfit.

The power of networking and community

This past year, I really have embraced the importance of community and networking in growing my business. I attended events, but I wasn’t really an active participant. I didn’t  take full advantage of engaging people and learning more about my business community.  I made small, easy steps to engage more, like joining local Facebook groups, but I needed to step it up. I remember my younger brother telling me that “I need to put myself out there, and just do it!” My brother said this in response to a conversation about me feeling nervous and uncomfortable attending a networking event by myself. I was like “I won’t know anyone.” “I’m going to look crazy standing by myself.” In the past, I would drag my husband to events. My husband is a pro at networking and I hid behind his assertiveness.

My mindset and comfort level has shifted regarding attending these events. I am proud of myself. I have stepped out my comfort zone and I am actually enjoying it. It still have a little awkward moment at the beginning, but it doesn’t take me long to warm up. I have met some amazing women and made several connections.

The latest event that I attended was Baltimore Cake and Whiskey networking event at the Anthem House Apartments, hosted by Stephanie Bradshaw and Alpha Graphics. I loved my outfit for the evening. There is something about looking good that gives you that extra boost of confidence. The jumpsuit felt very retro with the wide legs. The neckline was bold with ruffles and a deep v-neckline. My favorite detail was the lace-up back. The multi-colored jumpsuit was a mix of linen and rayon that helped me stay somewhat cool during the humid evening.

Black on black

Wearing black on black just looks so sexy, sophisticated, and luxurious. I love color, but I must be honest... maybe 1/3 of my closet is comprised of black items. Some people think wearing all black is dull and boring. (disclaimer: I do not suggest wearing black all the time, mix it up) The key to wearing black on black is the styling.  In this outfit, I mixed the fabrics. The top has a nice satin look to contrast the plain fabric of the wide-leg trousers. Also both pieces have nice details, the top with a lace v-neckline and buttons along the pockets of the trouser. Fit is also important in wearing all black. You don’t want to look like you are wearing a big trash bag. I love the straps of the cami, they are thin and adjustable… showing a little bit of skin. The high-waisted pants cinch my waist, show my curves, and elongate my legs.

Summer at the office!

So… I found another great option for your summer work wardrobe. In my previous post, I gave a few tips about dressing professional during the summer.  This shirtdress is a nice item to keep in rotation this summer. Dresses sometimes just make things easier in the morning, just one piece. The style of this dress is simple and maybe a little more preppy with the stripes. The pockets are a nice detail, but my favorite detail is the back with the small cut-out. The midi length is perfect for the office. My shoe pairing may be a little too bold for a more conservative office environment. If you do decide to wear a really high heel a block heel might be a better option. The platform toe makes the shoe a little more comfortable to navigate the office.

You can get multiple uses out of this dress for the summer by wearing it with flats or even as a coverup on the beach. The dress is 100% cotton, a breathable fabric, which really helps during those hot days.

Stay cool and professional

The weather is heating up, but let’s stay cool and professional. Professional dress in the summer does not have to be complicated or boring. Some offices even have a more relaxed dress code in the summer. Be sure to be knowledgeable of your company policy regarding your wardrobe and overall personal presentation.

For this look, I picked a sleeveless button blouse.  I like this option because the shoulders are not completely exposed. If you decide to go with a thinner strap you can pair it with a lightweight breathable cardigan sweater, vest, or blazer. I would actually keep a blazer or cardigan on hand in the office to combat the frigid air conditioning, or for a meeting that might call for a more polished look. The bow is a nice added detail on the blouse. But let’s talk color… ORANGE! Sometimes I get trapped in wearing black and neutral colors. The summer is a great time to add that pop of color. You don’t have to go too crazy with bright colors. You can pair a bright color with a neutral pant, like I did in my outfit.  My bottoms are a slim grey ankle pant. Grey is a nice switch up, if you typically wear black bottoms. The ankle pant is my preferred length over a capri cut. I continued the grey color to my shoes to create a continuous line.

Some other things you might want to consider:

  1. Will this garment show my sweat stains?

  2. Is my neckline workplace appropriate?

  3. Does my skirt hemline rise to an uncomfortable length when I sit down?

  4. Can I walk in my shoes?

  5. Can I navigate the workday without tugging, pulling down, or adjusting my outfit?

Most importantly embrace your personal style while being professional in your office!

One jumpsuit multiple looks

A month or so ago, I purchased a black utility zip jumpsuit. Whenever I purchase new items, I always evaluate the cost per wear and its versatility.  The cost per wear is a method used to determine whether an item is a good investment piece. The jumpsuit was originally priced at $89.50, then marked down to $79.99 with 40% bringing the subtotal to $47.99. So far, I have worn the jumpsuit two times so my cost per is $24.00. I’m certain I will probably wear it at least four more times this summer, and even into the fall, lowering my cost per wear even more. Even though my item was on sale, don't let full price quality pieces scare you.  A full price quality item could have a better cost per wear, than a cheaper version. The better quality one will last longer verses only getting a few wears out of the cheaper version, only to replace.

As I mentioned earlier versatility is another factor that goes in to my purchase decision. How many ways can I wear my purchase? The decision to purchase the jumpsuit wasn't hard for me. The design is simple and the color is neutral. In the picture I styled the jumpsuit two ways, but so many more outfits can be created:

Backyard BBQ style

The Memorial Day holiday weekend is kind of the unofficial start to summer. What is summer without a backyard barbecue or cookout? I had so much fun hanging out with two other families on a beautiful sunny Saturday. Food, friends, fun, and fashion… what more can a girl ask for, all of my favorites!

During this cookout and most, you stay outside pretty much the entire time. I try not to go too crazy about finding the perfect outfit, but I want it to be comfortable and fun. I am however, particular about the fabric selection. I prefer a fabric that is breathable, so I don’t have to worry about sweating and sweat staines. A few breathable fabrics are cotton, linen, and chambray.  For shoes, I would opt for something that is easy to walk in the grass, and comfortable to stand in for long periods. Shoes that are great options for a cookout are wedges, flats, sneakers, or  block heels. If your cookout transitions into evening you might want to bring a light jacket.

During the BBQ, I felt really comfortable and stylish in my denim wide leg jumpsuit. I love the off the shoulder ruffle neckline. For shoes, I went with a flat sandal. My shoes really weren't noticeable with my wide leg pant. Usually my necklaces are simple but I found this gorgeous neutral statement piece.

Oversized Denim Jacket

I have a few styles of denim jackets in my closet.  Lately I’ve been loving the oversized style, and will probably be a spring/summer staple. The jacket is lightweight, slouchy, and can be worn in so many ways.

In this look, I am wearing a utility denim style with railroad (striped) design, and a draw string to cinch the waist. I purchased a slightly larger size (didn't cinch the waist), to achieve more of the oversized look. I paired the jacket with distressed white jeans for a rugged vibe. The top is simple, a plain white t-shirt. You can make the outfit a little more chic with heels, but I decided to wear my favorite Chucks.

LEISURE VIBE

This dress just made me feel like I was off vacationing somewhere exotic. Sadly that was not the case, but there is still hope. I am behind the ball with making summer plans this year. When the plans do come together, this linen ruffle shouldered dress will be in my suitcase. The dress is no fuss, comfortable, and has pockets. My list of off the shoulder items in my closet is growing rapidly. I paired the dress with comfortable detailed sandals. This sandal can be worn with so many outfits this summer. Usually my go to earrings are studs, but these tassel earrings add a nice pop of color and complete my exotic leisure vibe.

FUN, FLIRTY, AND CHIC!

When styled correctly crop tops can be fun, flirty, and chic! My personal preference is to style crop tops with high-waist pants. The high waist pant allows me to still show some skin without exposing my whole tummy. The key to finding the right crop top for you is determining how much skin you want to show. The event you are going to will also help determine how to style your crop top. I believe that for more formal events the the outfit looks more sophisticated when the bellybutton is covered. The crop t-shirt that I am wearing has a boxy silhouette at the bottom. The pant is sleek and sophisticated with a tuxedo stripe on the leg. The top would also look cute with high waist jeans.

Bold Blazer

Do you have a blazer in your closet? How often do you wear it? When I meet with clients for closet evaluations, I go through a list of must have items, and a blazer is at the top of the list. You can style the blazer in so many ways, which makes it a great investment piece. Choosing the right fabric, color and cut will determine how much wear you can get out of it. If you already have a black blazer in your closet, opt for bold color to mix it up a bit. Even with a bright color blazer, you can still create several outfits. You can pair it with neutrals or complimentary colors.

This spring I couldn’t resist picking up this yellow blazer.  The yellow is so bright and sunny. I decided to keep my look a little more casual with distressed boyfriend jeans, and oversized blouse, and fun blue flats.

White denim

White denim is definitely included in my spring/summer capsule wardrobe. Contrary to old fashion rules, white can be worn year round. I’m warning you now, you will see future blogs post with lots of different white denim pairings. I have a bit of a crush with white denim. I will admit though, for a long time, I was a little afraid to wear white jeans. I admired them on others but didn’t truly embrace until a few years ago. White is a nice break from the day-to-day blue denim.

The overall look of my outfit is neutral with the blush blouse and pewter vest. The blouse is oversized with a high low design. The vest was a nice contrast to the feminine blouse. The vest has structure with a utilitarian/military vibe. The vest adds an extra layer of warmth during some of the cooler spring days. The jewelry is very simple with a tassel necklace and hoop earrings

MOMMY CLOSET MAKEOVER GIVEAWAY WINNER

And we have a winner! I team up with two amazing lady bosses to provide a mommy closet makeover, Di Ter Avest and Fabi Maranho. The closet makeover was just in time for spring cleaning.  Here are a few quick tips that guided our time. We had such an amazing time and I think the pictures of our lucky momma and her family capture the day. It was a pleasure styling the family for their mini photo session.

Fathia Savory's Quick Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Closet:

  1. Stop… hold off on shopping some of your new favorite items that you see all over your social media feed

  2. Take items out of your closet by sections. Your goal is to take everything out of your closet. You need to see how much stuff you have, this will be the true test of “I have nothing in my closet to wear!"

  3. Exam the garment quality and wear. Is the item faded, fabric pilling, staines, any holes, etc.

  4. Sort the garments into sections keep and "get rid of". If you are limited in space you may need a store pile. In the "get rid of" pile you can sort into toss, donate, and sell. If you sell some items you can add money to your spring shopping budget. If you need to toss items there are few retailers that offer recycling programs.

  5. Try on items. Do the items fit well? Are the items from a past trend that you don’t see yourself embracing anymore? When is the last time your wore item?

  6. Make a list of wardrobe staples that are missing or need to be replaced from your wardrobe.

  7. Put all items back into your closet using your organization tools. Sort items by style and color.

Organization and Storage solutions that work well:

  • Wooden hangers make a statement and protect the form of the garment. Velvet slim hangers maximize hanging  space and help prevent clothing from slipping off.

  • Canvas boxes are excellent for storage. The fabric of the garment can breathe better with cotton storage. You can use the boxes for sweaters, shoes, etc.

  • Canvas garment covers can be used for evening gowns

Ruffles

I fall somewhere in the middle between loving and tolerating ruffles. I think the key is finding the right style for you. Do you like very voluminous or small ruffles?

The silhouette of this top is sophisticated and flirty. The ruffles are a modern take on the romance trend. I believe that you can show some skin in a way that doesn’t have to be scandalous. Though there are times when scandalous is totally appropriate.  One thing that I really like about this blouse is that the long sleeve lace still gives you some coverage, if you prefer to stay more covered.

I decided to dress the blouse down with camouflage crop pants and fashion sneakers. It was fun mixing military with romance. But you could totally pair the blouse with a wide leg pant and sandals to dress it up. I kept the accessories minimal with silver hoop earrings and a few rings. The ruffles already add dimension to the outfit.

Jumpsuit Style

I have not always had luck with finding a jumpsuit. I have a few in my closet but I had to try out several options before adopting this style.

This particular pink crop jumpsuit was calling my name in Target, and I just had to try it out. I was not sure about the drawstring tie, but I think it actually works. The drawstring creates a cinched waist that helps shape the garment. I kept the styling simple with a quilt tote bag, peep toe ankle booties, and a little flirty with opening a few buttons. The jumpsuit is very comfortable and versatile. The jumpsuit can be dressed up with a pair of heels or worn more casual with a pair of fashion sneakers. The silhouette of this jumpsuit is oversized, which is right on trend and a fresh option to try for spring!

Casual, fun, and toddler friendly

After my hubby goes to work, my mornings are filled with pancakes, channeling superhero powers (Black Panther. PJ Masks, Superman, etc.), and catching up on ALL things fashion.

As much as I know the importance of pulling yourself together, some days can be challenging. One morning I took my son to school, and another mom said “oh I don’t feel so bad, you look like you just rolled out of bed too!” I was so embarrassed, I mean fashion is my thing. That particular morning it was just a struggle to get out the house, and to be honest I looked a mess. Everyone has a bad day here and there, and it’s easy to get stuck in a fashion rut. Looking pulled together as a mom doesn’t have to be complicated. Trade in your yoga pants and workout gear for a pair of jeans and a sweater. Put in the effort for yourself! You deserve it. And don’t forget if you need help, I am here to assist. I have shopped for several moms and have put together capsule wardrobes to help ease the their day-to-day routine.

The look I created here is a perfect outfit for a mom… causal, fun, and toddler friendly. The temperature is still back and forth and this oversized chunky sweater was just what I needed to still keep warm, but not hot. The subtle pop of green and fringe seams gives the look a little edge. My distressed boyfriend jeans are a go to item in my closet. These jeans are comfortable and I can move around and keep up with my little guy. I completed the look with fringe tan ankle boots.

Looking for Spring!

Don’t get me wrong there are things that I love about winter, Christmas, birthday celebrations, cozy sweaters, pretty white snow that slows you down for a day a two, but now... I’m kinda maxed out! I am ready for the newness and freshness that comes when seasons change.

For this look I didn’t completely ditch my winter wardrobe, just the bulky layers. I paired my handkerchief white blouse with black faux suede over the knee boots. The white blouse is crisp and simple with a slight twist with the handkerchief silhouette. The boots are a little riskier but a fun transition item if the weather is still a little chilly. The key to wearing boots in the spring is pairing it with the right hemline and fabric. Under my shirt I am wearing black casual shorts. You can easily through on a long jacket or cardigan depending on the weather.

This week I started making a list of items I want to add to my spring wardrobe. The list includes some staples and some fun trendy pieces. Over the next couple of weeks, I will share more spring looks.

Outfit details:
Top: Calvin Klein handkerchief blouse // Boots: Mia Christa Thigh High // Necklace: A New Day Chain Tassel  // Satchel: A New Day // Madewell Stacking Rings

Oversized Hoodie

The oversized hoodie trend is sticking around, especially with the continued popularity of athleisure fashion. The hoodie is so warm and cozy… just a really comfortable garment. I am a firm believer that comfy clothes don’t have to be sloppy clothes. The look I created is a very effortless, yet still stylish outfit to throw on. The over the knee boots paired with the hoodie elevates the outfit to create a more chic look. Under the hoodie, I have on a pair of jean shorts.

The hoodie was a great steal from the JC Penney clearance rack. I’m not above shopping the clearance rack, but at times it can be overwhelming, and you definitely have to be in the mood to hunt. There are still some great winter finds as retailers transition to spring/summer products. The boots are by Marc Fisher, and were also on sale, too! I love buying my boots at the end of season to catch a great deal. But, if you decide wait to wait, the sizes can be limited. The tote handbag is by Sole Society.

Spring 2018 Color Trends

It might still be winter but my mind is on spring, and warmer weather!

Red and pink color combination is still a big color trend for Spring 2018.  It’s funny how this fashion pairing has become widely accepted, when old fashion rules dictated that these colors should not be worn in large scale together. If you are up to breaking some rules, here is a simple way to translate this trend into your everyday outfit. Have fun and add your own style personality!

With this outfit, the look was built off the blush pink mules and blush pink cross body handbag. For the top I opted for some pop with this bright, kinda cherry tomato blouse. To balance the colors out and not go full on with this trend, I paired it with distressed boyfriend jeans.
